Test target from Matt Bettersworth (Director Operations/Sales Co-owner) included. Rifle is a 100% custom hand built as a short 21″ barreled lightweight .338 custom for use on all North American game out to 900 yards. Premier Swarovski scope with a Ballistic Turret from Swarovski tuned to this rifle, these bullets. Rifle is zeroed for this scope with the included ammunition. Numbered from 200 yards (zero) to 1000 yards. Ships with rifle zeroed at 200 yards; target at 650 yards? Put the turret on 6.5. Target at 425 yards? Turn the turret to 4.25. Completely set up and done with barrel break-in, zero and tuned to 9oo yards. Recoil non issue as brake, stock, and set up cuts felt recoil to .308 levels.
NOTE TEST TARGET GROUP: I get grumpy with these test target measurements sometimes. These bullets are .338″ of an inch wide. Think about it. To shoot a 1/3″ group the bullets would have to go through the exact same hole. Bullets all touch on the test target but officially they measure .370″ at 100 yards. Suffice to say the rifle shoots better than you or moi.
WHY .338 WINCHESTER MAGNUM?? Got caught up in the 1000 yard shooter with all the new cartridges we all just gotta have; ELD and VLD bullets in the latest greatest fastest long distance 1000 yard no 1500 yard no 1800 yard barrel burners. Problem is I will not shoot at an Elk at 1000 yards. Nor 800 yards. Maybe 700 yards if conditions are perfect cause I cannot call wind well enough to insure a one shot kill. Frankly few in the world can past 1000 yards in ONE shot. Takes more than one and typically a spotter.. anyhoo, so after shooting and hunting with these VLD and ELD and the latest greatest discovered they are simply chasing the .338 Lapua! Since we are big on Elk, Moose, Bear why not build a long range lighter weight .338 Lapua with ammo available worldwide? Build the king? Called Matt at HCR Hill Country Rifles and he has built nine .338 Lapua rifles for us all under 12 lbs cocked and locked scoped and tuned.. with 24 to 26 inch barrels. From 50 feet to 2000 yards will kill all North American game no issues. Like I said though I do not shoot 1500 yards. Called Matt again and told him my ideal rifle has a 20 to 22 ” barrel, is Psycho accurate, 9 lbs ish, kills Elk to 800 yards. And I want one stop shots in a 33 caliber rifle which shoots FACTORY AMMUNITION I can buy off the shelf at the local gun store. He told me the .338 Win Mag in a 21 inch barrel will burn all the powder and the lethality to 900 yards would be stunning on large game. Told him I did not want a cartridge older than me. He said she said new powders, new bullets = new ballistics, energy, distance, lethality. Said ok.. build me a few. Well. Gosh. Psycho success. Portable rifles with 21 inch barrels that have the ability to shoot one inch groups at 500 yards, weigh 9 lbs ish, shoot FACTORY hunting ammunition, recoil on par with .308. And smackdown to 850 yards all day.

Topped with Mark Bettersworth’s recommendation; Swarovski lightweight hunting scope in the premier Z8i line. 2-16 x 50 Illuminated insures at 2x power you can take game at 25 yards yet move to 16X for your 900 yard shots! This was ordered with a picatinny rail for a bipod on the forward underbelly.
SWAROVSKI Z8i 2-16X50: If’n you think you need a 5-25x scope to shoot 600 yards you are, frankly, “all wet”. Wrong. Hathcock shot a PAVN General through the heart with a straight 10x at 700 yards. Back on track this lightweight illuminated Swaro which at 2x can be used from 10 feet out.. cranking to 16x is more than adequate for the 700 yard Moose shot. Erstwhile Alex has his 5-25x scope which cannot be used on game under 40 yards as the 5x magnification is too strong. Then he cranks to 25x for his 350 yard Elk shot and wonders where’s da Elk? At 25x your FOV is too narrow to discern your targets vitals (at 350 yards). Then let’s start chatting about parallax at 25x, then sight picture (wobbly and wandering reticle) at 25x. That said, sure we would put a 5-25 on the .338 Lapua if you are going to shoot over 1200 yards..

Then find a premier Z8i 2-16 x 50 illuminated Swarovski $3943 Swarovski website. Ship to Matt at HCR for professional mount. Swarovski custom turret cap is on the invoice but the actual Ballistic Turret we order separate form Swarovski (in the Z8i line) another $200. Then ship that to Matt to install and tune.
