OHIO ORDNANCE WORKS: “Ohio Ordnance Works, Inc. has a workforce of 80+ employees who work within the company’s 35,000+ square foot facility. OOW is currently supplying several thousand light, medium, and heavy machine guns to military customers around the world including our own U.S. forces”. They actually do a lot more than simply manufacture machine guns BUT as a sideline on the civilian side several years ago they started manufacturing the BAR Browning Automatic Rifle aka 1918A3-SLR for civilian sale. Pretty much exact replicas except they are semi-auto. Expensive. Real expensive. Weighs 19.5 lbs dry. Shoots .30-06. Always kinda wanted one but hey.. we all know the .30-06 is obsolete and so is the BAR. Nice piece of history though. Or is it? Read on..

H.C.A.R. HEAVY COUNTER ASSAULT RIFLE: The Ohio Ordnance Works Heavy Counter Assault Rifle, or HCAR as it is known, is an updated version of the old friend. Built and designed around the original Browning BAR rifle this semi auto variant reduces the weight of the BAR by almost 42%. Additionally the HCAR features updated components like a .30 round detachable box magazine, reduced weight bolt, ambidextrous bolt release and hydraulic buffer system. “We’ve Combined The Best Of Browning’s Ideas, Today’s Tactical Considerations And Accessories, And Cutting Edge Engineering From The Team Here At OOW To Bring You The Most Versatile .30-06 Weapon System Available Today”. Fer what? Why bother? In .30-06? An obsolete cartridge? The .30-06 was the premier WWII cartridge yeah I got that. It was replaced by the 7.62 (.308) because it was obsolete, right? Surprise! Military replaced the .30-06 because the .308 is shorter, can fit in a lighter shorter platform, weighs less, and the ammunition weighs less. Logistically the transport of 7.62 vs .30-06 runs into the savings of time, space, and money. But I digress.. turns out not only did Granddaddy come home from the war and use the ought 6 as a deer and Elk and Moose rifle successfully but that the 06 is a flat ass superior cartridge. Didja know it has an effective anti-material range of 4500 meters? That’s 5000 yards. Didja know it has an effective anti personnel range of 1371 meters? That is 1500 yards. Didja know it has been widely utilized as an anti-aircraft platform? Smoke me. Ok so the round is bad ass.

HUNTING RIFLE: These HCAR units are documented as moa rifles meaning they will shoot 1 inch groups at 100 yards.. or better. With premium hunting ammunition 3/4″ groups become the norm. These would be awesome deer, elk, moose, bear rifles.. from a box stand or in an ATV spot and stalk situation. If’n you are going to hump a mile or two fine but past that there would be better options. Scoped it weighs in at 14 lbs so have fun pig sticking too.

STEINER M8Xi OPTICS: Billy bad ass HCAR needs some serious optics if we are to utilize this platform properly. Only the best. These 1-8 optics are AWESOME on this platform; at 1x it is used the same as a red dot for CQB close quarter battle but if you wish to hit a 6 inch circle at 500 yards crank the magnification up! Military issue Steiner M8Xi is the newest version of the CQBMRSS as issued to military forces. At 1x the optics is used in CQB close quarter battle scenarios from 1 foot out to as far as you desire; by cranking up to 8x the ability to engage silhouettes at 800 + meters and or make the “apricot” shot is apparent. Reticle has an “enemy combatant” graph or rangefinder. By putting the “enemy combatant” in the graph an instant range estimation is shown. From Steiner military division; “used today by Special Forces around the globe – Steiner sets a new benchmark with the ultimate DMR (Designated Marksman Riflescope) M8Xi 1-8×24 with an 8x zoom and an outstanding field of view (4.8-34.2 m at 100 m). The 8x zoom gives the operator more flexibility and a higher resolution from close quarter to longer-range scenarios while the large field of view and the outstanding optical quality create a perfect overview of the surroundings at all times. The new M8Xi 1-8×24 has been designed to resist the toughest conditions and is already proven battle worthy and beyond”.

G2 ACCU-TAC BIPOD: Wide stance and ratcheted leg extension gives you the adjustability needed for precision aim and repeatability. You will feel the stability and security of your rifle as never felt before. The SR-5 G2 has the ability to cant which can be locked with its throw lever. Ratcheted leg extension design allows the shooter to quickly adjust to 9 different heights without having to align each leg equally. The spring-loaded leg extension retracts quickly with a one-button retraction lever. The retracted leg height of 6 inches extends to a full open position of 10 inches with 8 other positions in-between. To engage or adjust leg position, simply pull the spring-loaded leg downward to move each leg independently. Leg position can be deployed to 90°, 45°, locking securely into 4 positions.

DRAG BAG/SHOOTING MAT: Premier soft case unfolds into a massive shooting mat with cartridge holder and two stow pockets one on each side. Muzzle cover and weapon securing straps. Backside has a full pack strap system which is “packed” under the outer cover (hidden) so it is snag free when not in pack mode.

ROCKEGROUP UPGRADES: 1))) You need a Fat Bastard brake installed from APA. We did. 2))) You need to hump this when you are pig sticking with a shoulder sling so you can carry the HCAR in a shooting “at ready” position parallel to the ground; we installed a mount, adaptors, and Magpul sling. 3)) They ship theirs with two 30 round magazines. You need a standard battle load of 120 rounds so ours ships with four 30 round magazines.

COST/BUILD: The exclusive HCAR is listed on the OOW website for $6995 shipped; no scope no sights no bipod nada. Steiner M8Xi model number 8723 is $4275 on the Steiner website (mfg Germany military issue). JP Cantilever 34mm mount $222. Their unit has a “cap” on the end of the barrel to cover the threads. Our unit ships with an APA muzzle brake installed $255. Sling with mount and adaptors $120. ACCU-TAC SR5 bipod with quick release $330. Premier shooting mat/soft case $404.
